The nightmare of losing your manuscript file to a corrupt hard drive, a natural disaster or a theft can be greatly reduced if you have made a backup of your file.
There are many different ways to back up your file but it’s also a good idea to do a backup that is off-site. For this reason I just adore Dropbox. After signing up for a Dropbox account you simply download and install Dropbox to your computer, laptop, tablet or phone, and link that device to your Dropbox account. Every time you make a change to the original file your virtual file is instantly updated (assuming you are connected to the Internet).
The beauty of this system is that if I’m in a hurry and grab my laptop, but forget to grab the jump drive or whatever it is that I backed my file up on, as long as I can connect to the Internet my file will update itself to the latest version. Cool hey! You can get a free Dropbox account with 2GB of space here.
